Puerto Rican House
The Puerto Rican community changed the downtown dynamic of New Brunwick. According to migrant and long-term resident Claudio Mir, Puerto Rican immigrants first started arriving in New Brunswick in the 1980s, following a strike at the University of Puerto Rico in 1981.
"The students were kind of radical," Mr. Mir notes. The youth of the Puerto Rican community created a radical presence within their home on Bayard Street off of George Street. The migration of the Puerto Rican students diversified the university and created a subculture within the Hub City defined by youth and vibrancy.
